About us

The Association of Environmental Protection „Val“ was founded in 2004 as a non-profit legal entity. „Val“ aims at promoting, developing, and advancing environmental protection through the following activities:
  • informing the public about environmental protection
  • development programs of international cooperation
  • joining the activities of institutions and associations for environmental protection
  • publishing books and journals in the domain of our profession
  • organizing public lectures to educate our members and citizens interested in learning about the need and means for environmental protection

Since the 1990s we have been conducting research within the scientific research project entitled „The health and other characteristics of mammals in the Adriatic Sea“ with the support of the present day Ministry of Science, Education, and Sports of the Republic of Croatia. Beside the chief researcher Professor Hrvoje Gomerčić, ten other experts, vets and biologists from both the Veterinary Faculty and the Natural Sciences and Mathematics Faculty at the University of Zagreb are working on this project.

The project activities include: monitoring the presence of particular kinds of sea mammals in the Adriatic Sea, their geographical and temporal distribution, health condition and cause of death, gender and age structure, morphological and genetic characteristics, and nutrition. Beside scientific research, we also teach students, tourists, and inhabitants of the islands and coastal region about sea mammals. We publicize the results achieved and scientific knowledge at expert and academic conferences and in our publications.
Since the 2005/2006 academic year the Veterinary Faculty of the University of Zagreb has held graduate and postgraduate classes in the area of sea mammals. We plan to conduct field research as a part of these classes, which would take place on the Island of Ugljan and in the surrounding sea, once the Centre is built. Besides accommodating Croatian students, the Centre could also accommodate foreign students and researchers who would be able to conduct their research in the domain of cetology there.
