Establishing a center for the research and protection of sea mammals

Croatia needs a center for the research and protection of sea mammals.  In the Adriatic Sea there exists a residential population of bottlenose dolphins which needs to be systematically observed and researched.  In this center for the research of bottlenose dolphins and other mammals there will also be a museum as well as a library with expert and scientific literature. Exhibits will be organized, so will  lectures as well as undergraduate and graduate classes.  Our goal is the creation of the European scientific center for the research of sea mammals, especially those in the Adriatic.  Because of the fast and easy availability in the case of emergency situations, (entanglement of dolphins in  nets, stranding of dolphins on land, etc.) and its central location on the Adriatic, the island of Ugljan is an ideal choice of where to build the Center for the research and protection of sea mammals.  The work of the center will be based on the systematic research of Adriatic sea mammals which was started twenty years ago in conjunction with the Group for the protection of endangered animal types of the Croatian Biological Association.

The establishment of the center is supported by:

  • The Veterinary faculty of the University of Zagreb
  • Society for Dolphin Conservation, Munich, Germany
  • Mitsubishi International Corporation, New York USA
  • Members and friends of the association „Val“ („Wave“) as well as bottlenose dolphin adopters
  • Board of animal and comparative pathology, Class for medical and biological sciences and the Croatian Academy of Arts and Sciences. (CAAS)
  • Representatives from Zadar county
