Types in the Adriatic

The Adriatic Sea not so long ago was home to the Mediterranean monk seal (Monachus monachus), common dolphin (Delphinis delphis) and the bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus).  Of these three types, only the bottlenose dolphin lives, feeds, reproduces, raises its young and dies in our sea today.

Through regular tracking it has been noticed that in the last twenty years the finback whale (Balaenoptera physalus), Risso´s dolphin (Grampus griseus), striped dolphin (Stenella coeruleoalba), Cuvier´s beaked whale (Ziphius cavirostris) and ordinary dolphin (Delphinis delphis) have also entered the Adriatic.  They enter the Adriatic from the Mediterranean Sea most believably following their prey and in general stay only a short time.
