Hrvoje Gomerčić was born January 4, 1940 in Zagreb where he finished his elementary and secondary education. His parents were Profesor of Engineering Adolf Gomerčić and Dubravka Gomerčic (nee Marković) He has a brother, Master of Sciences--Engineering Krešimir Gomerčić and a sister, Master of Sciences--Engineering Jadranka Čižmek (nee Gomerčić). He is married to Doctor of Sciences Vera Gomerčić (nee Pehar) with whom he has two children: a daughter, Master of Sciences Ana Galov and a son, Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Tomislav Gomerčić.
In 1959 he graduated from the II realistic comprehensive school in Zagreb and enrolled at the Veterinary faculty of the University of Zagreb where he received his diploma on January 22, 1965. During his studies he was a demonstrator and assistant in the subjects of anatomy, histology and embryology and was given awards for completed scientific papers.
He has been working at the Institute for anatomy, histology and embryology of the Veterinary Faculty of the University of Zagreb from 1964 until the present at first as a supporting assistant and in 1965 he was chosen to be assistant. In 1969 he achieved the status of Master of Sciences in Histology and Embryology and in 1976 the academic status of Doctor of Sciences in Anatomy, histology and embryology. In 1979 he held an introductory lecture and was chosen as lector of Anatomy, histology and embryology. In 1983 he was chosen as guest professor, in 1985 scientific advisor, and was named regular profesor in 1987. In 1999 he was given the permanent rank of regular professor. He taught Plastic anatomy at the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb and Anatomy of man at the Natural Science and Mathematics faculty in Zagreb.
He was a member of numerous committees for the defense of masters disertations at the Veterinary, Medical and Science and Mathematics faculties of the University in Zagreb. He was a member of the International Committee of Unions of highly schooled teachers, the Association of university teachers and collaborators, member of numerous Council and Advice committees of the Veterinary faculty and rector of the University in Zagreb.
He was given the award of Deserving professor of the University in Zagreb. He was a member of numerous international and national scientific associations (The Croatian Association of Veterinarians and Veterinary Technicians, the Jugoslavian Anatomy Association, the Section for normal morfology and ultrasound diagnostics of the Croatian Board of physicians, the Croatian Biological and Veterinary Associations, the Croatian Association of Anatomy, Histology and Embryology, the section for electronic microscopy of the Croatian Natural Sciences Association, member and associate of the Croatian Academy of Arts and Sciences, regular member of the Croatian Academy of Medicinal Sciences, World Association for Buiatrics, European Association of Veterinary Anatomists, New York Academy of Sciences, National Geographic Society, American Biographical Institute, member and founder of the Society for Marine Mammology, Group for Marine Mammals of the International Commission for the Scientific Exploration of the Mediterranean Sea). He was secretary and president of the Croatian Biologial Society for two mandates and vice-president of the Croatian Association of Anatomy, Histology and Embryology. He participated in numerous domestic and international scientific gatherings and was the organizer and leader of some of them.
He was the president of Guidance of the Veterinary faculty and during the homeland war he was commander of the Crisis Staff of the same faculty. He did not complete mandatory service in the Jugoslavian National Army (JNA) but as a volunteer during the war he was commander of one National protection company and was named default officer of the Croatian Army in the role of high-lieutenant and was recognized with a homeland war medal.
He has published numerous scientific papers many of which are cited in scientific literature some of his works are cited in one of the most well known anatomic textbooks in the world, Nickel, Schummer, Seiferle: Anatomy of Pets Textbook. He is the author of books, chapters in books, scientific papers published in magazines, he is cited in tertiary and secondary publications, scientific papers criticized and published in collections, papers with international and domestic groups and editor of scientific books and author of a few scientific popularisation articles.
He was the manager of the international project „Estimation of bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) population in the Croatian part of the Adriatic Sea“ (UNEP – MAP, 1/98 SPA/RAC) and domestic projects „Bioactive substances and the development of experimental animal organisms“ (Ministry of Science, Republic of Croatia, 3-03-288), „Research and protection of Adriatic sea mammals“ (Ministry of Science, Republic of Croatia, 3-03-289) and „Research of Adriatic sea mammals“ (Ministry of Science, Republic of Croatia, 053016 and has actively participated in the realisation of a few international and domestic projects. He is now the manager of the domestic project „Health and other biological characteristics of Adriatic sea mammals“ and the international project „Rescuing the last Adriatic bottlenose dolphins“.
He has held numerous public lectures and has interpreted on television and radio in Croatia and Europe. He has participated in interpretations at numerous domestic and international gatherings. He was for many years the technical editor then later chief accountable editor of the scientific magazine Veterinary Archive and the Croatian Veterinary Newspaper and member of the Editorial committee of University publications. He is now a member of the Consultation committee of the magazine Veterinary Archive. He was a member of the scientific and program committees of a number of scientific gatherings: a few Croatian Biologists Congresses, Anatomists gathering Alpe-Adria and the 5th annual meeting of the Section for electronic microscopy of the Croatian natural sciences association.
In undergraduate teaching activities he developed a program and implemented two new elective subjects at the Veterinary faculty: „The anatomy of lab animals“ and „Charachteristics of the locomotive devices of horses“. In the Biological department of the Natural Sciences and Mathematics faculty he implemented the required subject „Anatomy of Man“ and at the Academy of Arts and Sciences „Plastic Anatomy“. He systematized and organized the work of the laboratories for experimental embryology and electronic microscopy and was personally involved and participated in the acquisition and installation of equipment for the digitalization of microscopic and macroscopic pictures.
He is the editor and co-author of the book „Veterinary handbook“, Fourth updated and added to edition. Jugoslavian Medical Edition, Zagreb 1989 and „Veterinary handbook“. Fifth, changed edition. Medical Edition, Zagreb 1996 as well as „Ethical aspects in relations between man and animals“. The Croatian Academy of Arts and Sciences, Zagreb, 1998. „Deserving Croatian Veterinarians“, Second Veterinary Faculty, University of Zagreb, Zagreb, 2003 and editor of the book „Poultry farming“, Editorial Institute Globus, Zagreb, 1995 and „Croatian-Czech dictionary for the fishing trade“, Intergrafika, Zagreb, 2002.
He is the co-author of internal scripts at the Veterinary faculty in Zagreb and he has published numerous teaching articles.
He was mentor to numerous undergraduate, graduate and doctoral papers as well as students scientific papers.
He is assistant to the chief editor of a dictionary which is being developed, „Dictionary of Medical (human and veterinary) terms“ organized by the Croatian Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Lexicographic Institute „Miroslav Krleža“ from Zagreb.
He has published several articles in „Croatian General Lexicon: A-Ž. Lexicographic Institute „Miroslav Krleža“. Zagreb 1996. He has compiled over one thousand words from the area of animal health for the „Croatian Language Dictionary“. Lexicographical Institue „Miroslav Krleža“ and School books, Zagreb, 2000 and over seven thousand completely analyzed guidelines for „Dictionary of medical (human and veterinary) terms“ which is being organized by the Croatian Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Lexicographic Institute „Miroslav Krleža“ from Zagreb.
